  • 3/4 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
  • 3/4 cup hot water
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 large egg whites
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar (lightly packed)
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter (cubed, room temperature)
  • 1/4 cup Dulce de Leche (storebought or homemade)
  • 2 oz dark chocolate (finely chopped)
  • 2 oz heavy whipping cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix vegetable oil, buttermilk, hot water, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients using an electric mixer until well blended.
  5. Divide batter between pans and bake for about 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a rack.
  7. For frosting, whisk egg whites over simmering water with brown sugar until thickened; add butter and dulce de leche.
  8. Frost cooled cakes and drizzle with ganache made from melted dark chocolate and heavy cream.
