- 3/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- Peanut or vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Warm water and milk in a bowl until just warm; add sugar and yeast. Let foam for about 15 minutes.
- Mix in beaten egg, salt, butter, and half of the flour until smooth; then add remaining flour until just combined.
- Knead gently on a floured surface, place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled (about 1½ to 2 hours).
- Heat oil in a Dutch oven to 370°F. Roll out dough to about 1/4-inch thick; cut into squares.
- Fry pieces in hot oil for about 2 minutes per side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
