  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast

  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Warm water and milk in a bowl until just warm; add sugar and yeast. Let foam for about 15 minutes.
  2. Mix in beaten egg, salt, butter, and half of the flour until smooth; then add remaining flour until just combined.
  3. Knead gently on a floured surface, place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled (about 1½ to 2 hours).
  4. Heat oil in a Dutch oven to 370°F. Roll out dough to about 1/4-inch thick; cut into squares.
  5. Fry pieces in hot oil for about 2 minutes per side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  6. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
