Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Gradually blend the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until combined and adjust purple food coloring as desired.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
