Ingredients
- 3½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup whole milk, warmed
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 2 tbsp red food coloring
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
- ¾ cup brown sugar, packed (for filling)
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon (for filling)
- ½ cup mini chocolate chips (optional)
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened (for frosting)
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
- 4 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
- 2–4 tbsp milk (for frosting)
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix 2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, combine warm milk, melted butter, egg, food coloring, and vanilla. Mix this into the dry ingredients and gradually add remaining flour until you form a soft dough.
- Knead dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Let it rise in an oiled bowl covered for about an hour until doubled.
- Prepare the filling by mixing softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl.
- Roll out the dough into a rectangle and spread the filling evenly over it. Roll tightly into a log and slice into 12 pieces.
- Place rolls in a greased baking dish and let rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- For frosting, beat softened cream cheese and butter until smooth; gradually add powdered sugar and milk to achieve desired consistency.
- Frost rolls after they cool slightly.
