Perfectly suited for Thanksgiving or any festive occasion, this delightful side dish is a crowd-pleaser that complements roast turkey, glazed ham, or crispy fried chicken. With easy preparation steps and accessible ingredients, anyone can create this classic Southern staple.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups cornbread (homemade or store-bought)
  • 6 cups Italian bread (cubed)
  • 1 stick (½ cup) unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion (diced)
  • 4 stalks celery (diced)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 23 cups fat-free chicken stock (or homemade)
  • 2 large eggs (beaten)
  • Fresh parsley, poultry seasoning, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and spray a 9×13-inch casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Cut the cornbread and Italian bread into cubes. Spread on a baking sheet to dry overnight or toast in the oven at 350°F for about 10 minutes.
  3. In a large sauté pan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add onion and celery; cook until softened (about 5 minutes), then stir in the garlic for another 2 minutes.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine dried bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, chicken stock, parsley, seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix well and adjust moisture as needed. Fold in beaten eggs.
  5. Transfer mixture to the casserole dish, spread evenly, cover with foil, and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes until golden brown.
